CATHERINE MURPHY ON CHILDREN & YOUTH AFFAIRS

 CHILDREN & YOUTH AFFAIRS

This section of the site concerns the aspects of children and youth affairs that are not strictly related to education and disAbility & Special Needs.

As a parent and grandparent  as well as a long-serving public representative I have had a wide and varied history of tackling children & youth related issues and feel that there is always one common denominator; if we get it right early on, the potential of our children and young people is virtually boundless.

As a legislator I feel one area of children & youth affairs that urgently needs to be addressed is the outright absence of childrens rights from our constitution.  Without an express declaration by the people of Ireland as to the values and rights we wish to articulate in our legal system on their behalf the invisable nature of childhood in Irish life will continue.

The shameful revelations regarding abuse, victimisation and maltreatment suffered by children throughout the decades since the foundation of the State must be addressed at a legal and policy level so that we draw a line in the sand and declare that this is where it ends.  I intend to continue striving for the rigths of every child of the State to a childhood that is not overshadowed by poverty, inequality or worse.
