Electoral Register “Clean-Up” Replacing Old Problems With New
10th October 2006, Press Release
Catherine Murphy, TD (Ind) has today highlighted serious problems which are emerging in the review of Electoral register warning that they must be tackled or we will be replacing one set of inaccuracies with another.
"I received correspondence on Friday from Kildare County Council, which indicated that only 20% of people who were given forms by those employed to clean up the electoral register have been returned to the Council", revealed Murphy who went on to state, "this will mean that after spending €118,000 allocated to it by the Department of the Environment, Kildare County Council will wind up with a register where people will be deleted, this is likely to happen to where adult children have moved from the family home however they still live in the County/Constituency, or where a family have moved but have remained in the County/Constituency. There may also be people who are entitled to be included on the register for Local Elections only however they are being included in the same way as Irish Citizens. While there had been constant complaints about the inaccuracy of the electoral register, there is little point in spending a small fortune replacing one set of inaccuracies for another.
