Telecoms Competition Threatened By Private Monopoly

Catherine Murphy, TD today demanded in the Dáil that Government tackle an issue which has left over 40,000 households and businesses without landline telephone services since 5pm on Monday 2nd October.

Murphy contends that “In selling the national telecommunications network into private ownership the Government has created a private monopoly.”

Murphy made the following statement in the Dáil this afternoon:

“In selling the national telecommunications network into private ownership the Government has created a private monopoly. This has highlighted the urgent need for Government to tackle the impossible situation where 40,000 Smart Telecom customers are now without a service and are being held to ransom.  The Minister must act to provide an interim solution otherwise the only one message will that will emerge will be the only supplier that can guarantee a service is Eircom.”
