Estimate of Road damage following ice/snow
Following the recent sub zero weather many of our road surfaces have badly deterioriated. Kildare County Council collect Road Tax, however, they do so as agents for the Government, they do not retain that fund. In late January each year the Council are notified by the Department about how much they will be allocated to spend, that information should be available on or after the 28th January. Additional funds are required this year to keep the regional and local roads in a reasonable state of repair.
I tabled the following question about the matter:
“Has an estimate been done on the cost of repairing roads/paths within the Celbridge Electoral Area following the recent severe weather, if so what is the outcome? If not, will an estimate be done?”
I received the following report: “Approximately €800,000 was received from the Department of the Environment in 2010 in recognition of the additional costs sustained by Kildare County Council during the recent severe weather. Furthermore, on a national level the County and City Managers Association are negotiating on behalf of Local Authorities for additional funding to repair roads damaged by the severe weather. It is estimated that there was approximately €1 million damage done to roads in County Kildare. This estimate has not yet been broken down by electoral area. Some repairs have already been carried out in the Celbridge electoral area to the worst affected roads.”
