Some Kildare North Homeowners Penalised Unfairly

Press Release | 1st March 2013

Independent TD Catherine Murphy has highlighted the growing difficulties some North Kildare residents are experiencing when trying to insure their homes.
Some insurance companies have targeted areas in North Kildare that they feel are located too near to the local canal, river or other water course and have hiked premiums to ridiculous levels or in some cases refused insurance.
This is an extremely unfair and ill-thought out process by the insurance companies’ involved. They have clearly not undertaken adequate research into the areas other than looking at a map and deciding the water course poses a threat. They have not factored in that these areas have never experienced flooding nor has the threat of flooding ever been an issue.

For them to try and exploit outlandish claims of flood threats in order to charge exorbitant premiums or refuse insurance on homes is not only poor business practice, it is fundamentally unfair. People should not be punished because the insurance companies fail to do proper research.
