Opposing the Household Charge: Catherine Murphy hosts a Townhall Meeting in Leixlip
Kildare North | 6th February 2012
This Thursday, February 9th Catherine Murphy TD will host a Town-Hall style meeting on the Household Charge in Leixlip. The meeting; scheduled for 8pm in the Springfield Hotel, Leixlip Road; is being held in response to the many concerns which have been expressed to Deputy Murphy about the charge from anxious householders.
Deputy Murphy has strongly opposed the measure from the outset and will outline that opposition at the meeting, while also discussing the implications of the charge for the householders of north Kildare.
“The charge as it stands is extremely unjust in that it’s a flat rate which applies equally regardless of ability to pay or even value of the home. For me, all direct taxes must be as progressive as possible and this charge is anything but. Coupled with the overly narrow grounds for exemption, and the poorly thought out means of distributing the funds raised, the Household Charge is a badly designed, unfair burden which I believe must be reversed.
“I also have some serious concerns around the fact that citizens are being asked to pay more money for a system of Local Government which can only be described as dysfunctional at best. For me, radical and far-reaching reform of our local government structures is absolutely essential before we even begin to contemplate charging people for it.
“I would invite all householders along to the Town-Hall Meeting this coming Thursday, 9th February at the Springfield Hotel, Leixlip at 8pm, where I’ll be outlining why I oppose the charge, answering questions and addressing some of the many issues constituents have raised with me over the past few weeks.”
