Final Proposals From Taxi Regulator Will “Drive Forward” On Services – Murphy

8th March 2006, Press Release

Deputy Catherine Murphy has welcomed the changes included in the Taxi Regulators report “Driving Forward” published this week.

She had through a submission to the Regulator late last year as part of the consultation process highlighted two key defects on what was initially proposed: Dublin for example is a designated taxi meter area’s, those wishing to travel just beyond to surrounding counties could be refused a service because they were not within the metered area. Fares also varied from area to area which was not in either the publics or the taxi providers interest. Both of these issues have been comprehensively addressed in the final report with the designation of the entire country as a metered area and a uniform fare being proposed, the annual rip off particularly at Christmas time by a small segment of the industry will thankfully be a thing of the past.

“Given that the regulator initiated this process just last September the progress of that office has been impressive, the timetable is included in the final report for delivery of the changes which will make a meaningful contribution to the modernisation the Taxi services.” Deputy Murphy concluded.
