Council to Provide Allotments in Maynooth & Leixlip

Cllr Catherine Murphy has welcomed the decision in principle to provide allotments in both Maynooth and Leixlip.   The Maynooth site is on the Dublin Road while the grounds surrounding the Wonderful Barn have been earmarked for Leixlip.   Logistical issues still remain to be worked out  such as gaining access to the sites from the road,  provision of water and waste management.

“There continues to be a demand for allotments located in Celbridge,   a small parcel of land  currently in the charge of the  OPW at Castletown Demesne has been suggested,  I have been informed by the OPW that they are currently developing a policy on this issue.   Should this site not materialise other locations may have to be considered.”

What the Council proposes is to develop allotments of 100, 150 and 200 sq.m in size.   When provided the allotments would be rented on an 11month licence annually and the allotment holders would  then be required to form a management committee in order to run them.   A design for the layout of both sites including the exact layout and  number of the varying sizes of plots and the costs for constructing the site is being worked on and will be presented to a future meeting of the area committee.

“While an exact date is not yet available I am hopeful we will see the plots in active use in 2010.”
