Reinstatement works in Maynooth following major sewage upgrade works

According to Cllr Catherine Murphy, the appointment of a contractor to carry out reinstatement works in Maynooth following the completion of works associated with the upgrade of the lower Liffey Regional Waste Water works, is imminent. This work will include the removal of the bandstand and the restoration of Pound Park.
There was considerable upset locally when this major scheme commenced primarily because it had occurred without prior public consultation. It impacted on areas of the town where the Tidy Towns had carried out improvements over the years, which was demoralising for those who had put in substantial voluntary hours. The Tidy Towns Committee subsequently put together a restoration programme and submitted it to the Council. This was done in order both to ensure the area’s affected would be properly reinstated and where possible, enhanced. Locations such as the pound have been difficult to maintain, the tidy towns committee are for example seeking a hard surface here. Having spoken to a Council Official I am hopeful that some of their suggestions will be taken on board.
This upgrade of the waste water facilities is a very necessary project, it impacts on all the north Kildare towns. In addition to renewing sewage/drainage pipes, the capacity of the treatment plant at Leixlip will be expanded, odour abatement units will be installed and enormous storm water holding tanks are being provided at the pumping stations in Maynooth and Celbridge in order to deal more effectively with storm water and reduce the possibility of flooding.
