New Approach Needed to Development at Celbridge Interchange – Murphy
5th March 2006, Press Release
The refusal by Kildare County Council of the proposed development by Celbridge Amenities just beyond Crodaun Forest Park has been welcomed by Deputy Catherine Murphy. The proposal consisted of Residential, Commercial, Retail, Leisure the Residential element consisted of apartment blocks and houses. Deputy Murphy had objected to the proposal.
In refusing permission the development strategy contained in the 2005 County Development Plan together with the Regional Guidelines for the Greater Dublin area were a primary reason for refusal, the refusal is significant in that it sets the scene for further development in the North Kildare Area according to Deputy Catherine Murphy.
Reason number 5 for refusal states: “Further development in the Metropolitan Area will be located so as to maximise the potential of the public transportation system. The additional populations will be accommodated through….limited further development of the North Kildare Towns of Leixlip Celbridge, Maynooth and Kilcock focused on accessibility to the public transport network, especially rail”
It is now necessary for the Council to consider how the area around the Interchange should be used. Given that much of the land is outside the scope of the town development plans of Celbridge, Leixlip and Maynooth. The Interchange is the new gateway to those towns it is now necessary for Kildare County Council in conjunction with the communities to develop a long term strategy for this area. Too often communities have found that they are forced to be reactive to proposed inappropriate developments which has the effect of soaking up large amounts of community resources, “a planned model for this location is the rational approach for this location”
