HVGs Spill Onto M50 Due to City Ban
Dáil Statement, 13th February 2007
Catherine Murphy, TD has today in the Dáil demanded that Minister for Transport, postpone the banning of HGVs in Dublin City Centre until an assessment of its impact on the M50 and the surrounding roads network is carried out and a traffic management plan devised.
Murphy’s calls came in response to reports she has had that HGV traffic on the N4, N7 and M50 has already increased significantly over recent weeks, and also, most worryingly, the revelations of the NRA they no assessment of the wider impact of the ban outside the environs of Dublin City Centre was carried out. She stated as follows:
“How the Minister for Transport has satisfied himself that the announced Dublin City Centre HGV ban will not create yet another traffic problem for M50 users.
The NRA, this weekend, asserted that no assessment of the impact the ban will have on the M50 and its surrounding roads, was carried out and that no traffic management plan has been devised to deal with diversion rates. The Minister must postpone this ban in lieu of an assessment and a management plan being produced.”
